Sabercat Announcements!

3 SUSD Students Receive Community Celebrating Diversity Scholarships

Three Scottsdale Unified School District seniors were selected as community scholars and will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. They are Saumya Gupta from Desert Mountain High School, Jonathan Hernandez from Arcadia High School and Dominic Bergs from Saguaro High School.

The scholarships were made possible through funding by corporate sponsors who support La Gran Fiesta and the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration in partnership with Community Celebrating Diversity and the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

The selection criteria and procedures of the program were designed to ensure that all eligible students receive consideration without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation or economic background. Criteria included that the students must be full-time residents of Arizona, be citizens of the United States or provide evidence of being permanent residents, have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and rank in the top 25 percent of their senior class. The scholars were selected based on a combination of criteria, including financial need, community service, academic performance, leadership and a required essay.

SUSD Grading Practices

On April 16th, the Governing Board approved changes to Scottsdale Unified School District’s grading practices that will be implemented in 2013-14 school year. The recommendations were developed by a committee made up of teachers, parents, administrators and high school students. The committee studied the discrepancies between report card grades and performance on standardized assessments and the inconsistencies in grading practices across the District. In order to develop the recommendations, they studied best practices from experts across the country. The recommendations were designed to improve consistency while increasing academic rigor by focusing on student’s abilities to demonstrate what they have learned. The majority of a student’s grade will be determined based on how well they perform on assessments which include projects, essays, portfolios, tests, etc. This proficiency based system will help us better prepare our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for higher education and the workforce.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Andi Fourlis will host two informational meetings this spring for parents and students to learn more about the changes in the grading practices they can expect to see next year. The meetings are scheduled for May 8th and May 20th at 6 p.m. at the Mohave District Annex, 8500 E. Jackrabbit Road, Scottsdale 85250. If you plan to attend one of the meetings, please RSVP to mday@susd.org.
